I love your site. Wondering what are your thoughts on organic sugar? I used to use it all the time. It’s tan where as the other is white.
Hi Tammy. Check out this post on sweeteners. http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2010/06/14/sweeteners-101/. Love your site! Where can I find recipes for Whole wheat donuts and ww raisin bagels?
Thanks!
Hi Lara. I don’t have a recipe for either one. I do have one for cinnamon raisin bread…http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2011/05/25/recipe-whole-wheat-cinnamon-raisin-bread-for-bread-machine/. Jill
I have very picky eaters and I have really been wanting to change how we all eat. Anyways, I was looking at the recipe index and my oldest son came up and looked at the pictures of the different foods and says, “Wow, she is a really good baker!” Lol maybe there is hope for us yet
Just want to say “I really love your site”. It’s been so helpful in mixing up my daughter’s lunches and I can’t wait to try all the recipes you have on this site. I’m a fan:-)
Thanks so much for your site. I’m learning so much. I had a question. What about chili? Can it be done without cans?
Yes, you can do chili without cans. Pioneer Woman has a really good recipe. I use ground turkey in ours instead of beef and then I add pinto beans that I’ve soaked and cooked in a crock pot. You can just make your own tomato sauce using the stove and a blender.
Hello, I’m trying to find this recipe that I found on your website recently and can’t seem to locate it. They are blueberry muffins, made with ww pastry flour, quinoa flour, wheat germ, blueberries and chocolate chips are some of the ingredients. Thanks
How can someone who doesn’t have a mixer make the whole wheat tortillas?
Hi Amanda. Many have reported having success doing them by hand. Jill
I absolutely love your recipes! A friend introduced me to your site two months ago, and my family and I have been eating real food ever since. Thank you! And, you’ve inspired me to cook, which I now love to do because I know I’m making healthy food. I’ve been looking through your site for a chili recipe (without using canned beans? In a slow cooker?) but I can’t seem to find one (I’m new to this cooking thing and don’t quite know how to “go with the flow in the kitchen”). Do you have a chili recipe?
Hi Jennifer. No, we don’t have a chili recipe to share at this time. We’re glad you are enjoying the recipes and the blog. Jill
I grew up on canned chili and I never liked any that were homemade until recently. Pioneer Woman has a really good recipe, but it needs to be modified to be “real food.” I use ground turkey instead of beef. Instead of canned beans, I soak the pinto beans for a few hours and then cook them on low in a crock pot overnight. You can also make your own tomato sauce by cooking down the tomatoes and throwing them in a blender.
Here is the website:

I just wanted to say thank you!! Your website is just awesome!! I can not get enough of it, I am on here just about everyday and I find such great things!!
Was wondering that if I have a recipe and want to change it to be “real food” acceptable how do I do that? For instance, I have a meat loaf recipe and it calls for brown sugar and beef bullion. How would I substitute these ingredients?
Hi Kelli. Changing recipes is a total experiment. You probably won’t get it exactly right the first time. You could substitute some honey or maple syrup perhaps for the brown sugar. As for the bullion, could you just use a broth to replace it? Again, it becomes an experiment converting recipes. Best of luck. Jill
Love the blog, recipes, meal plans, resources, etc. I use them weekly. Thank you, thank you, thank you! What are your favorite Thanksgiving recipes? Is there a stuffing recipe you love? Or a substitute for everyone’s favorite – terrible green bean casserole?
Thanks!
Hi Paige. We’re so glad you are enjoying the recipes and the blog. Here is a link to some of the Thanksgiving recipes…http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2012/11/09/recipe-chestnut-and-prosciutto-stuffing/. Jill
I don’t see any recipes for beans and I love beans and they are cheap and easy to make. What is your opinion of using them in a real food menu plan?
Hi Kayla. Beans are great as you mention. Here are a few recipes…http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2010/07/15/recipe-tomato-corn-black-bean-side-salad-or-dip-if-you-want-it-to-be/, http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2011/08/29/recipe-easy-slow-cooker-refried-beans/, http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2011/08/15/recipe-taco-salad/ and http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2010/08/04/recipe-traditional-hummus/. Do you have a cranberry sauce recipe you can share? Thanks!
Georgia – I’m sorry but we don’t. Jill
I have been trying to print recipes and it keeps saying “page not found”. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi Georgia. Thanks for letting us know…we’re looking into it. Jill
Hi Georgia – I know it’s been a while, but I just wanted to let you know that Jill is reformatting ALL of our recipes to include a print button (that should work). Hopefully all will be done in a week or so.
Hi, I’m trying to get the meal plans but cannot find it anywhere on the Facebook page.. Help!
Hi I love you blog , getting ready for my daughters first year of school and I’m so glad I found you because I am already preparing . Now my question is what kind of cheese do you use ? I know mozzarella part skim and ricotta have less grams of saturated fat but I would like to know what you feed your family .
Hi Jackie. Glad you’re enjoying the blog. We use whole milk cheese. Jill
i love your website and facebook page! Its awesome to have such great resources! We often have some sort of granola bar/energy bar type thing available for when we are on the go (and for my husbands breakfast since he refuses to get up with enough time to eat). In our quest to eat real food, most of our options are now out. Ive been making our own and buying a small supply of the good, real food ones (so expensive!) for when i dont have time. I was excited to see the recipe for LARAbars since thats one of the ones we have on hand. One thing that concerns me about them is the dates. When i first started buying them, I was suprised that the nutrition content was basically zero and the sugar (even though natural) was so high. When i was shopping for the dates I realized that they are just sugar. No vitamin c or anything. It seems like that is the main ingredient in the real food bars as it acts as the binder. Just because its real food doesnt mean its not empty calories that i probably dont need. Is there anything else that could be used as a binder? Maybe something with some nutrition in it? Thanks!
Hi Sarah. As you state, any sugar in the dates is natural. I’m not sure what else you might use as a “binder”. You might be interested in reading more about the dates though to make sure your understanding of the nutritional content is correct. Here is a post that might help. http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2012/04/30/recipes-using-medjool-dates/. Jill
Hi there! We are in the process of turning our house into a non processed home! Thanks for all your recipes and insight. I know that you aren’t a big calorie counter, but I was wondering if you have nutritional information for any of your recipes?
Hi Emily. We don’t have nutritional information for our recipes. Here’s a little bit more information as to why…http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2011/04/29/mini-pledge-week-8-stop-eating-when-you-feel-full/. Jill
I really love this site and the concept of ridding ourselves of processed foods. I’m working on “clean” eating. But, I am overwhelmed. Where do I start? I have 5 kids and a budget to work with. How do I do this?
Hi Alexis. Take a look here as a starting point…http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/start-here/. You may also want to check out the 100 Days on a Budget series…http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/100-days-on-a-budget/. Best of luck. Jill
We love your recipes and tips -however we are also gluten free. Can you recommend a flour or flour mix to use as a substitute. Thanks!
Hi Sara. I don’t have a flour blend I really like. I use the King Arthur one only when I absolutely have to, but, in general, I try and use almond flour, buckwheat flour, coconut flour, gluten free oat flour, millet flour or brown rice flour – basically the whole grain gluten free flours. There are some sites out there that will tell you how to make your own all purpose gluten free flour, but, you usually still have to include some arrowroot, tapioca starch/flour or potato starch, but, at least the other flours can be “whole grain” ones. I hope that helps a little. Jill
Just made the whole grain chicken nuggets and they were a hit! I am wondering about how to make fish nuggets? Type of fish, use the same breadcrumb mix as with the nuggets?? Thank you!!
Hi Amanda. I would use a white fish like a cod. I suppose you could use the same breadcrumb mixture…I don’t see why that wouldn’t work. Jill
do you have any recommendations for a good whole-wheat homemade bread?
Hi Daisi. Try this one: http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2011/08/17/recipe-honey-whole-wheat-sandwich-bread-for-bread-machine/ ~Amy
Hi Lisa, LOVE your site! I am on the 2nd week of your meal plans and I am sharing them with everyone and raving about it all – Im writting to ask if you have a sandwhich bread recipe? and one that I can use in a bread maker? and one that i dont need a bread maker? Thank you! I looked through your index but maybe i missed it:)
Hi Nicole. Thanks for the love! Here is the recipe for the machine: http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2011/08/17/recipe-honey-whole-wheat-sandwich-bread-for-bread-machine/ Many readers have reported doing this by hand and then baking it in the oven at 350. You could also try this recipe from Deliciously Organic that does not use a bread machine: http://deliciouslyorganic.net/everyday-whole-wheat-bread/“. ~Amy
