Ingredients & Substitutes

Here are the ingredients and substitutions for these homemade Twix bars. Scroll down to the recipe card below for the entire recipe.

First, make the shortbread base with almond flour. Use blanched almond flour, not almond meal.

Melted coconut oil helps thin out the dough. If you are not dairy free, feel free to use melted butter.

Sweeten with pure maple syrup or honey.

A little vanilla extract adds a delicious flavor.

Lastly, add a pinch of sea salt.

For the caramel layer, use pitted dates. If they are hard, soak them in water for 10 minutes to soften them up.

Use almond butter, cashew butter, or peanut butter. It should not contain any added sugar or oil.

In addition, add in the vanilla and sea salt to this layer as well.

Add a little coconut milk to add creaminess to the caramel.

For the topping, use dark chocolate chips and coconut oil. Stir until creamy and melted.

Taste & Texture

These homemade Twix bars offer the perfect balance of flavors and textures. The buttery shortbread base is crumbly and tender, the caramel layer is gooey and rich, and the chocolate topping is decadent and smooth.

Each bite delivers a delightful crunch followed by a melt-in-your-mouth experience!

How to Make

Step 1

Make the base: In a mixing bowl, combine the almond flour, melted coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until well combined and a dough forms.

Step 2

Press the base: Line an 8x8-inch baking dish with parchment paper. Press the almond flour mixture evenly into the bottom of the dish to form the base layer. Use a spatula or your hands to pack it down tightly. Place in the freezer to set while you prepare the caramel.

Step 3

Prepare the caramel layer: In a food processor, combine the soaked dates, almond butter, vanilla extract, sea salt, and coconut milk (if using). Blend until smooth and creamy, scraping down the sides as needed. If the mixture is too thick, you can add a bit more coconut milk.

Step 4

Spread the caramel: Remove the base from the freezer and spread the caramel mixture evenly over the top. Smooth it out with a spatula. Return to the freezer for about 30 minutes to firm up.

Step 5

Melt the chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.

Step 6

Coat the bars: Once the caramel layer is set, remove the bars from the freezer and cut them into bars or squares. Dip each piece into the melted chocolate, allowing excess chocolate to drip off. Place the coated bars back on the parchment paper.

Step 7

Set the chocolate: Once all bars are coated, return them to the freezer for about 15 minutes to set the chocolate.

Step 8

Serve and store: Enjoy your Paleo Homemade Twix Bars! Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week or in the freezer for longer storage.

Expert Tips for Success

Follow these tips and tricks to make the best homemade Twix bars.

Use High-Quality Ingredients: The better the quality, the better the taste.

Don’t Rush the Caramel: Allow it to cool slightly before spreading it over the shortbread to help it set properly.

Chill Between Layers: This ensures each layer sets well and makes cutting easier.

Cut with a Hot Knife: Heat your knife under hot water to get clean, crisp edges when cutting the bars.

Flavor Variations & Add-Ins

Here are some fun ways to switch up the flavors of your homemade Twix bars!

Nutty Twist: Add chopped nuts like almonds, pecans, or hazelnuts on top of the caramel layer.

Spicy Kick: Sprinkle a tiny bit of cayenne pepper or cinnamon into the caramel for a unique twist.

Salted Caramel: Add a pinch of sea salt to the caramel layer for that perfect salty-sweet combo.

Dark Chocolate: Use dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate for a richer flavor.

How to Serve & Store

Serving Suggestions

Room Temperature: Let them come to room temperature if stored in the fridge for the best texture.

With Ice Cream: Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra special treat.

Storing

In the Fridge: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Freezing: Wrap each bar individually in plastic wrap and store in a freezer-safe bag for up to three months. Thaw in the fridge before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I make these gluten-free?

These homemade Twix bars are naturally gluten-free.

How do I prevent the chocolate from cracking when cutting?

Use a hot knife, and ensure the bars are slightly warm before cutting.

Why does my caramel layer keep sliding off the shortbread?

This issue often occurs if the caramel is too warm or too runny. Allow the caramel to cool and thicken slightly before spreading it over the shortbread. Chilling the shortbread layer before adding the caramel can also help it adhere better.

Equipment Needed

Pre-Cut Parchment Paper Sheets: Line the pan with parchment paper.

Pyrex 3 Glass Mixing Bowls: These are our favorite mixing bowls for baking.

Pyrex Glass Measuring Cups: Use these measuring cups to measure out the ingredients.

Brownie Pan: A high-quality brownie pan makes all the difference for this recipe.

Ingredients

For the base:

  • 1 cup almond flour
  • ¼ cup coconut oil (melted)
  • 2 tablespoon maple syrup (or honey)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

For the caramel layer:

  • 1 cup Medjool dates (pitted)
  • ¼ cup almond butter (or peanut butter butter)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 2 tablespoon coconut milk

For the chocolate coating:

  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Instructions

  • Make the base: In a mixing bowl, combine the almond flour, melted coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until well combined and a dough forms.
  • Press the base: Line an 8x8-inch baking dish with parchment paper. Press the almond flour mixture evenly into the bottom of the dish to form the base layer. Use a spatula or your hands to pack it down tightly. Place in the freezer to set while you prepare the caramel.

  • Serve and store: Enjoy your Paleo Homemade Twix Bars! Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week or in the freezer for longer storage.

Notes

  • If your Medjool dates are hard, soaking them in warm water for 10 minutes will soften them, making them easier to blend into a smooth caramel.
  • For a creamier caramel layer, add coconut milk gradually while blending until you reach your desired consistency. You can adjust the amount based on how smooth you want it.
  • When melting the chocolate, microwave in short intervals to prevent burning. Stir frequently until smooth for the best coating texture.
  • Ensure each layer is properly chilled before adding the next. The base should be frozen solid before adding the caramel, and the caramel layer should be firm before coating with chocolate to achieve clean edges.

I wasn't allowed to leave a comment because it told me it was a duplicate, and I had already said that. Since I just made these today, that isn't possible! I sent a detailed comment but if you'd like me to post it, I can email it.

I don't remember the last time I bought a candy bar, but Twix was always my favorite! This is a delicious recipe but it does take a some time due to the number of steps and cleanup time. I love dates, especially with almond butter and chocolate chips (a halved date with almond butter and chocolate chips is a favorite, but rare, treat for me). The only reason for 4 stars is that I would have liked a crispier bottom crust. I think that would require a baked crust, though. The crust was a little wetter than I expected so I might add just a little more almond flour next time. The caramel filling is still gooey even after several hours of freezer time but that's fine. Overall, it's a good substitute for the original Twix and they probably won't last long!
