Okay, just to be clear upfront - it takes only 5 minutes to stir up the batter for these homemade fudge brownies, but of course a little longer than that to actually bake them! Enjoy a whole wheat brownie that makes for a nice alternative to boxed brownie mix.
5 Minute Homemade Whole-Wheat Flour Brownies
But as I was making this batch I was thinking how it really doesn't take much longer to make brownies from scratch than it does to add some eggs and other stuff to one of these lovely boxes of brownie mix pictured down below.
So while homemade Fudge Brownies (with sugar) don't quite fit our definition of real food, I think we can all agree they're WAAAAY better than this highly processed factory-made stuff that's full of partially hydrogenated oil (i.e. trans fat), refined flour, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and a bunch of other additives I can barely pronounce and therefore would most definitely not cook with at home. And we all know most people like to have a good ol' fudge brownie on occasion. For a healthy idea, make these Avocado Brownies or these Gluten-Free Brownies!

My Go-To Chocolate Chips: Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips
Whether it's brownies you're after or just a handful of chocolate chips, I love using the brand Enjoy Life Foods. Their company has managed to make chocolate chips (and morsels, minis, and chunks!) solely using the ingredients that are meant to be in chocolate: Sugar (Cane Juice), Natural Chocolate Liquor, and Non-Dairy Cocoa Butter.
This is unfortunately no small feat in our industrial society - when you look at the back of most other chocolate chip packages you'll find ingredients that do not belong (such as Soy Lecithin and Artificial Flavoring)! Since Enjoy Life's chocolate chips are so pure, they are also incredibly allergy friendly including: Gluten Free, Wheat Free, Dairy Free, Peanut Free, Tree Nut Free, Egg Free, Soy Free, Fish Free, and Shellfish Free.
I love that and knew you would, too. :)

Rohini says
Hi, Is there any way I can exclude eggs( as I do not eat eggs)?
Aubrey says
Sometimes "flax seed" eggs work as a sub in brownies: http://bonzaiaphrodite.com/2011/10/how-to-make-a-flax-egg-for-vegan-baking-the-right-way/
Lauren C says
Omg were these good. I used mint chips mixed with regular because that is what I had. Delish! The whole family liked them.
Kendra says
You wouldn't happen to have nutritional info for these would you? I'm looking forward to making them when I get home! Thanks for posting!!!

It not found "chocolate chips" so I used "baking chocolate" instead, not sure if it was a good choice...
Amy says
My family really enjoyed these! I doubled the recipe and baked them in a 9x13 pan and they were almost completely devoured. Thank you!
Robyn says
Hi! Is anyone else having an issue in which the middle of the pan does not cook? :(
Danielle says
Made these with my three year old tonight and they were so delicious! She just loves doing all the steps in all of your recipes by herself! She even uses the backs of the measuring cups to make her "well" in the center! :) We have definitely found our go to brownie recipe! Thanks for all of your hard work!
Maggie says
We love Enjoy Life products because of a soy allergy! We find them at the local grocery stores in the health food or organic food section. They also make a lot of other stuff that, while not necessarily real food, is better than most things and can go to schools that need something with a shelf life.
Christy L. says
Saw this recipe today and made them tonight. My peanut gallery all gave two yummy thumbs up!! I did modify the recipe by taking out butter and used coconut oil, instead. They were SUPER easy and do taste delicious!!! Thank you! This will be a great recipe for my kids to learn to bake on their own.
Jamie says
Eating these now. Made a few changes. My wheat flour was not bleached. I didn't use any chocolate chips. I cooked them in my iron skillet for a little less than 20 mins. They turned out perfect and tasty. I bet they would have been even better with the morsels of chocolate chips.
Angela says
White wheat flour is not bleached - there is red wheat, and white wheat (you can see the color difference in the wheat berries) and white wheat flour simply refers to flour that is ground from white wheat.
Christy says
My family and I just got done eating these...so yummy!! Went exactly by the recipe, didn't change a thing..well, except the baking time was a little different..only took 25 min. ..maybe could have taken them out at 20 min. They are so chocolaty and yummy!! Thank you!!
Karen says
Made these brownies tonight for my family to celebrate our wedding anniversary. They were a delicious sweet treat! We topped them with homemade whipped cream. Yum!! Thanks for another great recipe Lisa! PS - Dinner was your crock pot flank steak fajitas. A perfect meal all around :)
Jen says
Has anyone tried using honey or maple syrup instead of sugar?
Paula says
What type of sugar did you use? Cane sugar??
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Paula. Yep, just plain old organic granulated cane sugar. :)
Madeleine says
Is white whole wheat flour bleached? I am thinking "no" but want to be sure! Thanks!!!
Sarah says
No, it's not bleached, it's just the type of wheat they start from. The bran layer of white wheat kernels is noticeably lighter than normal "red" wheat kernels. Using the whole white kernel yields a whole wheat flour that is milder in flavor. You can easily use red wheat, or just labeled as whole wheat flour here, the flavor will be just a little more wheaty.
Bethann says
Just wanted to say how amazing these brownies are! They turned out perfectly and I didn't modify or sub one thing. :) thanks!
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Kathy. That is not something we've tried though I've had super yummy black bean brownies. If you try, let us know. ~Amy
jenny says
I didn't have enough chocolate chips, but added some chili green and black chocolate bar too and they are great!
EL says
Good Recipe and I agree those box baked goods have too many chemicals. I will try the recipe.
Emg says
It's been discovered that 10% of the country is allergic to gluten ... and 90% of the population is sick of hearing about it.
renee says
LOL. ha, ha. Despite having this in our home, I'm sick of hearing it too.!!!!
Caroline says
Can Coconut oil or anything like that be used in place of the butter?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Sure, you can replace it 1:1.
Marcy says
I am going to try this with coconut sugar... What made you go with sugar over a natural sweetener?
Lisa says
I make treats with sugar so infrequently it's just what I typically use (like the old days).
Marjolein says
Yummy!
Plan to do this with my kids. I look forward to the eating part.!
thanks for the brownie recipe.
Mediterranean Recipes says
Looks delicious, i want to taste it!
Maria says
Can't wait to try these as a summer time treat! Will go so well with homemade vanilla ice cream!! I really want to buy Enjoy Life chips but I really wish they made chocolate chips the exact size/type as toll house! All I see are mini's, dark, and chocolate chunk. My family is particular about their chocolate chips and in order for me to make the switch it better be identical! Ha! Now, for melting and baking purposes it wouldn't matter on shape and size but I would rather make 1 purchase and be done with it. ;)
Emily says
Are the EnjoyLife chocolate chips made with organic sugar? I'm allergic to refined sugars, but raw/organic sugars are fine. I'd love to be able to bake with these! And where are they carried? Only online?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Emily. I do not think they are organic: http://www.enjoylifefoods.com/chocolate-for-baking/mini-chips/. ~Amy
Maggie says
we find them at the major chain grocery stores in the health/organic section. (Giant/Safeway and Wegman's - best price)
Samantha says
I skipped the choc chips, and didn't cook them for quite as long as the recipe stated and they still came out a little dry. They look more moist in the pic. Is that because I left out the chips? Still quite nice though :)
Lisa says
Samantha - The gooey melted chocolate chips add a lot to this recipe so I am not surprised with your result. I hope you enjoyed them anyway.
saida says
We love Enjoy Life chocolate chips. They are available in most health food stores but after shopping around I found them being sold for much less at Organic Garage (I'm in Canada). I love Organic Garage too ;)
Kate says
These were delicious! Super quick and easy and completely satisfied my pregnancy craving for brownies tonight! :) Next time I will definitely try subbing coconut sugar.
Becky Jorns says
I love microwave cakes! But I found out I have an egg allergy now! Help! Is there someway of doing this without the egg? Thanks!
Jennifer S says
Becky Jorns - google "flax egg replacement" and it will tell you how much of what to use.
HeatherV says
I have a cake recipe without eggs. Wacky cake:
3 cups flour (works best with white, my spelt attempt didn't work well)
2 cups sugar (this is the recipe but I only put in 1 1/2)
6 T cocoa
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla
2 T vinegar
2/3 cup oil (I've used olive or sunflower)
2 cups of water
Just mix all the dry ingredients and then make little holes to add the wet stuff and then mix them all together in a 9x13 pan. No bowl needed if you mix carefully. 350 deg for 30-40 min.
karla says
If i want to use coconut oil instead of butter..how much would i need to use?? Thinking on making them right now! :)
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
It would be a 1:1 exchange. :)
Kacie says
If anyone is going to try this with a gluten free type of flour, let us know how it turns out. I have almond flour and coconut flour on hand but I won't get to making these until next week!
Kendra says
I have made these with an all purpose gf flour and it works fine.
Leann says
Have to say I was greatly disappointed to learn I could not have great brownies in 5 min for real. So now I have to wait till another time to try these. Hopefully they will be worth he wait.
Amber says
We LOVE Enjoy Life chocolate chips! Surprisingly enough, the local Walmart even carries them. They are a little bit pricier, but well worth it. We are GF and DF.
Jennie says
Can you purchase the Enjoy Life chips at the grocery store, or do you have to get them on-line?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Jennie, Whole Foods and Earth Fare carry them. ~Amy
Kathy says
Look great! I love to make brownies with blended black beans. Anyway to incorporate those and cut the butter a bit?
Shalini says
Could you use Coconut sugar instead?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Shalini. Should work and will be less sweet. ~Amy
Jill says
These look delish! I'd love to make these tonight but noticed I only have 1/3 stick of butter. Ack! Is there any way I can substitute? I'm not much of a baker!
Lisa says
Do you have coconut oil? You could make up the rest with that - just be careful when stirring it into the cold eggs.
Jill says
I do have coconut oil and was wondering if that would work. Thanks!
Kristin says
For optimal baking results, one should never stir anything into cold eggs, regardless of coconut oil. On days when I forget/don't have time to take eggs out ahead of time to warm up, I use this helpful Martha Stewart trick, I simply put the eggs In a bowl of hot water for 10 minutes, problem solved.
Your recipe looks similar to mine, except my recipe calls for blooming the cocoa in boiling water to intensify the chocolate flavor, Yum. I agree, homemade is always better then a box!
Serena says
I was thinking of trying to use coconut oil instead of butter.
Brittney @ Exploring Healthy Foods says
These looks so quick and easy! Love the recipe!!

How would you compare these to the almond butter brownies (which I LOVE)?
Lisa says
Which Almond Butter Brownies?
Jacqueline says
The Food Babe ones... These will be tomorrow's dessert so I'll post after that!
Joy says
Nothing can be better than those almond butter brownies. I made those and they were AMAZING!
Lisa says
Jacqueline - It's been a long time since I've made those...so it's hard to say a side-by-side comparison. Both are super good - I know that! :)
