5 Minute Fudge Brownies (with sugar)!

52 Reviews / 4.9 Average
These 5 Minute Fudge Brownies only take five minutes to mix the batter that is so much better than the store-bought boxed one. While it does contain sugar, I always say it's ok to indulge a little bit every now and then, and these are totally worth it.

Okay, just to be clear upfront - it takes only 5 minutes to stir up the batter for these homemade fudge brownies, but of course a little longer than that to actually bake them! Enjoy a whole wheat brownie that makes for a nice alternative to boxed brownie mix.

5 Minute Homemade Whole-Wheat Flour Brownies

But as I was making this batch I was thinking how it really doesn't take much longer to make brownies from scratch than it does to add some eggs and other stuff to one of these lovely boxes of brownie mix pictured down below.

So while homemade Fudge Brownies (with sugar) don't quite fit our definition of real food, I think we can all agree they're WAAAAY better than this highly processed factory-made stuff that's full of partially hydrogenated oil (i.e. trans fat), refined flour, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and a bunch of other additives I can barely pronounce and therefore would most definitely not cook with at home. And we all know most people like to have a good ol' fudge brownie on occasion. For a healthy idea, make these Avocado Brownies or these Gluten-Free Brownies!

My Go-To Chocolate Chips: Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips

Whether it's brownies you're after or just a handful of chocolate chips, I love using the brand Enjoy Life Foods. Their company has managed to make chocolate chips (and morsels, minis, and chunks!) solely using the ingredients that are meant to be in chocolate: Sugar (Cane Juice), Natural Chocolate Liquor, and Non-Dairy Cocoa Butter.

This is unfortunately no small feat in our industrial society - when you look at the back of most other chocolate chip packages you'll find ingredients that do not belong (such as Soy Lecithin and Artificial Flavoring)! Since Enjoy Life's chocolate chips are so pure, they are also incredibly allergy friendly including: Gluten Free, Wheat Free, Dairy Free, Peanut Free, Tree Nut Free, Egg Free, Soy Free, Fish Free, and Shellfish Free.

I love that and knew you would, too. :)

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ cup whole-wheat flour (I used white whole-wheat flour)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (I highly prefer the "super dark" variety)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ cup butter (melted, plus a little extra for greasing)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup chocolate chips ((I used Enjoy Life mini chips, see note above))

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Generously grease a 8X8 or 9X9 square baking dish with a little melted butter (a pastry brush makes this job super easy).
  • In a large mixing bowl whisk together the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder. Make a well (hole) in the center and drop in the butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix together thoroughly and then fold in the chocolate chips with a rubber spatula. (See I told you this would be quick and easy!)
  • Add the brownie batter to the baking dish and use the spatula to flatten out the top into one even layer. Bake for about 30 minutes and let cool before slicing into squares (if you can control yourself enough to wait - ha)! Enjoy.

How do you guys feel about unrefined organic coconut sugar? As far as a replacement for the sugar in the recipe, I mean.

Hi! I just made these brownies, and while they were okay, they were more cake like and not the fudgey brownie I was looking for. I followed the recipe exactly, except for I did not have chocolate chips so I left them out. I also had extra large eggs instead of large. Any suggestions? I'd like to give it another try but don't want them to turn out the same. Thanks so much!

It was the eggs! Even a lot of boxes brownies will suggest that you use an extra egg for cakey brownies. Try only one jumbo egg, and maybe take 5min off the cooking time also (they can still look soft in the center, but not liquid).

Well....I tried these out today. Used flaxseed instead of eggs, like I do in all my recipes and it DIDN'T turn out well! It was thin, and chewy and almost toffee like. Weird! Seemed like way too much butter, and I'll use coconut oil next time. Only used butter this time cuz I thought staying closer to the recipe would make it better. Not sure if I can duplicate the fudgy yummy goodness without eggs. :(

These are so yummy..especially with a glass of milk! The first time I made these, I made them just as the recipe says and they were perfect!! I made them a second time and cut back on the sugar and just added 2/4 cup instead of 3/4 cup..still so yummy! And then I made them again for the third time (mainly just continuing to experiment...ok maybe to eat them again..LOL) and along with only adding 2/4 cup of sugar, I reduced the amount of chocolate chips (we love enjoy life brand!) by adding only 2/4 instead of 3/4 ...again , so yummy and still so chocolaty! Thank you so so much for a wonderful recipe!! :)

I used to get so upset when I used to watch a certain popular food network show host and she'd recommend making quick desserts using the boxed mixes and then say something along the lines of 'go ahead and use the boxed mixes they just did all the measuring for you' which to me would imply that the stuff in the box was all the same ingredients that we'd use to make the same dessert in our own kitchen, but just removes the measuring and pouring step...WRONG!!! As we can see from the ingredients list in the post so much more other 'stuff' goes into those mixes that most of us wouldn't dream of adding to our homemade desserts. I always thought it was really irresponsible on the hosts part considering there are a lot of people out there that might take her statement to heart and not realize that the there is a bunch of additional stuff in the packaged stuff

I actually received a great response from them:

"Our chocolate is not fair-trade certified. **However, our supplier focuses on improving conditions for the cocoa farmers and is committed to operating in an ethical, responsible, and safe manner. We actually just received an update from this supplier confirming there is still NO child labor going on and that the supplier is helping to support local farmers in his area and the cocoa beans are grown without using chemicals! Unfortunately, at this time we are not able to source fair-trade ingredients that meet our strict allergen-free requirements."

        I love them already :-)

She has said in another post that she uses Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa Powder. Some markets only carry the regular Hershey's Cocoa powder, but I have seen the Special Dark at Wal-Mart. Their regular cocoa only has cocoa listed as the ingrediant, whereas the Special Dark has other stuff mixed in, which I'm not sure I want to eat. But obviously she's comfortable with it and maybe she's looked into it (I haven't)..

I wish Enjoy Life used Fair Trade Chocolate. The conditions of the families and children that provide most of the chocolate to the world are tragic. Equal Exchange has Fair Trade chocolate chips. For those of you with the time and inclination, do a little research on the conditions that this sweet treat is grown and processed in. Then imagine your children and family in those conditions. We don't want to stop eating chocolate, but I have trouble enjoying it if I know that other people's lives were damaged for my indulgence. Peace to you all.
