Okay, just to be clear upfront - it takes only 5 minutes to stir up the batter for these homemade fudge brownies, but of course a little longer than that to actually bake them! Enjoy a whole wheat brownie that makes for a nice alternative to boxed brownie mix.
5 Minute Homemade Whole-Wheat Flour Brownies
But as I was making this batch I was thinking how it really doesn't take much longer to make brownies from scratch than it does to add some eggs and other stuff to one of these lovely boxes of brownie mix pictured down below.
So while homemade Fudge Brownies (with sugar) don't quite fit our definition of real food, I think we can all agree they're WAAAAY better than this highly processed factory-made stuff that's full of partially hydrogenated oil (i.e. trans fat), refined flour, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and a bunch of other additives I can barely pronounce and therefore would most definitely not cook with at home. And we all know most people like to have a good ol' fudge brownie on occasion. For a healthy idea, make these Avocado Brownies or these Gluten-Free Brownies!

My Go-To Chocolate Chips: Enjoy Life Chocolate Chips
Whether it's brownies you're after or just a handful of chocolate chips, I love using the brand Enjoy Life Foods. Their company has managed to make chocolate chips (and morsels, minis, and chunks!) solely using the ingredients that are meant to be in chocolate: Sugar (Cane Juice), Natural Chocolate Liquor, and Non-Dairy Cocoa Butter.
This is unfortunately no small feat in our industrial society - when you look at the back of most other chocolate chip packages you'll find ingredients that do not belong (such as Soy Lecithin and Artificial Flavoring)! Since Enjoy Life's chocolate chips are so pure, they are also incredibly allergy friendly including: Gluten Free, Wheat Free, Dairy Free, Peanut Free, Tree Nut Free, Egg Free, Soy Free, Fish Free, and Shellfish Free.
I love that and knew you would, too. :)

How do you guys feel about unrefined organic coconut sugar? As far as a replacement for the sugar in the recipe, I mean.
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Abbey. Coconut sugar should work fine but we've not tried it in this recipe. ~Amy

I'll make these brownies because they look easy to make and I would rather not eat chemicals in my brownies. These also look really tasty.

this recipe looks sooooooo good.i just want to jump in and start baking!:)

Hi! I just made these brownies, and while they were okay, they were more cake like and not the fudgey brownie I was looking for. I followed the recipe exactly, except for I did not have chocolate chips so I left them out. I also had extra large eggs instead of large. Any suggestions? I'd like to give it another try but don't want them to turn out the same. Thanks so much!
Sara says
It was the eggs! Even a lot of boxes brownies will suggest that you use an extra egg for cakey brownies. Try only one jumbo egg, and maybe take 5min off the cooking time also (they can still look soft in the center, but not liquid).
Kim Packard says
Chocolate chips will make a big difference in the texture.
Joann Carrillo says
Just made these and they were the best brownies I ever had. It didn't even crumble when I cut it into squares. Came out beautiful! Thanks for sharing this recipe.
Linni says
Thank you for the recipe. I am slowly switching over to real food one step at a time. I was looking for a new brownie recipe without the oil and this recipe was pretty yummy. :)

Do you ever use honey granules instead of sugar or sucanat for brown sugar? I use them all the time and just wondered what your take on those are.
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hello. We've not tried the granules.
Lara says
Well....I tried these out today. Used flaxseed instead of eggs, like I do in all my recipes and it DIDN'T turn out well! It was thin, and chewy and almost toffee like. Weird! Seemed like way too much butter, and I'll use coconut oil next time. Only used butter this time cuz I thought staying closer to the recipe would make it better. Not sure if I can duplicate the fudgy yummy goodness without eggs. :(
Mieke says
Have you tried this recipe with honey instead of sugar- just wondering how they would turn out?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
We've not but several readers are considering it. :)

wondered if anyone has substituted maple syrup or honey for the sugar? Would they still be fudgy?
thanks.
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi there. We've not. Let us know if you give it a try.
Kristy says
What kind of sugar can I use for this recipe?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Kristy. This is one of the rare occasions that Lisa used white sugar. ~Amy
christy says
These are so yummy..especially with a glass of milk! The first time I made these, I made them just as the recipe says and they were perfect!! I made them a second time and cut back on the sugar and just added 2/4 cup instead of 3/4 cup..still so yummy! And then I made them again for the third time (mainly just continuing to experiment...ok maybe to eat them again..LOL) and along with only adding 2/4 cup of sugar, I reduced the amount of chocolate chips (we love enjoy life brand!) by adding only 2/4 instead of 3/4 ...again , so yummy and still so chocolaty! Thank you so so much for a wonderful recipe!! :)

Just tried this recipe... Thanks for the basic AWESOME brownies recipe.

I used to get so upset when I used to watch a certain popular food network show host and she'd recommend making quick desserts using the boxed mixes and then say something along the lines of 'go ahead and use the boxed mixes they just did all the measuring for you' which to me would imply that the stuff in the box was all the same ingredients that we'd use to make the same dessert in our own kitchen, but just removes the measuring and pouring step...WRONG!!! As we can see from the ingredients list in the post so much more other 'stuff' goes into those mixes that most of us wouldn't dream of adding to our homemade desserts. I always thought it was really irresponsible on the hosts part considering there are a lot of people out there that might take her statement to heart and not realize that the there is a bunch of additional stuff in the packaged stuff
tiffany says
Lisa, possible to use coconut oil vs. butter? Like you do in your banana bread recipe?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Tiffany. We've not tried this with coconut oil but that would be our typical sub for butter. ~Amy
Jillian says
Can I use organic cane sugar instead if the refined?

Could I substitute coconut sugar for white sugar ?

Yum! Would you know if Enjoy Life uses fair trade cocoa? Sounds delicious, but couldn't support it if child labor is being used, thanks!
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Jessena. They do not specify that they use Fair Trade. ~Amy
Jessena says
I actually received a great response from them:
"Our chocolate is not fair-trade certified. **However, our supplier focuses on improving conditions for the cocoa farmers and is committed to operating in an ethical, responsible, and safe manner. We actually just received an update from this supplier confirming there is still NO child labor going on and that the supplier is helping to support local farmers in his area and the cocoa beans are grown without using chemicals! Unfortunately, at this time we are not able to source fair-trade ingredients that meet our strict allergen-free requirements."
I love them already :-)

What are your thoughts on coconut sugar? Is it any less processed than refined sugar? Do you think it would work in this brownie recipe?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Kristen. Coconut sugar should work just fine and will be less sweet. Look for coconut sugars that are sustainably sourced, however. ~Amy

I just made these tonight and they are so delicious! Very rich but hard to just eat one since they are so yummy. Thanks for another winning recipe. :)
Amanda says
Do you use white granulated sugar or raw sugar?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hello. Lisa used regular white sugar. :)
Kristen says
Hi! Love your website! Wondering what brand you used for the cocoa powder? Looking for a good one! Thanks!
Amber says
She has said in another post that she uses Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa Powder. Some markets only carry the regular Hershey's Cocoa powder, but I have seen the Special Dark at Wal-Mart. Their regular cocoa only has cocoa listed as the ingrediant, whereas the Special Dark has other stuff mixed in, which I'm not sure I want to eat. But obviously she's comfortable with it and maybe she's looked into it (I haven't)..

do you have the nutritional info for this recipe?
Assistant to 100 Days (Amy) says
Hi Joyce. We don't provide nutrition information on our recipes. There are many online tools, however, that will calculate the facts for you. Our focus is on helping people eat more real foods and letting go of the processed stuff, less on numbers. :)

I made these and they were awesome!!!!

Can one use coconut sugar instead of every fine sugar?

I wish Enjoy Life used Fair Trade Chocolate. The conditions of the families and children that provide most of the chocolate to the world are tragic. Equal Exchange has Fair Trade chocolate chips. For those of you with the time and inclination, do a little research on the conditions that this sweet treat is grown and processed in. Then imagine your children and family in those conditions. We don't want to stop eating chocolate, but I have trouble enjoying it if I know that other people's lives were damaged for my indulgence. Peace to you all.
HeatherV says
We have Camino brand cocoa/chocolate in Canada and the packaging says it's Fair Trade. Maybe you can get it in the US. Google it.
