There are so many ways to make a delicious (and healthy!) green smoothie recipe — but did you know that you can combine almost any leafy greens and fruit with one basic formula?

Why I Love This Simple Green Smoothie Recipe

Not only does Jen have some great tips for green smoothie beginners, but she is also sharing her magic formula for fruit and vegetable ratios so you can change the recipe to suit your taste, dietary needs, or whatever you have on hand.

This green smoothie recipe is perfect as a homemade healthy snack, quick “fast-food” meal, or even as a way to cool off on a hot day.

We have a super simple and healthy recipe we’ve been itchin’ to share with you!!! As a crazy-busy passionate mom, I’ve been known to fuel my body with processed junk. Like those days when we found ourselves at Starbucks twice in one day…or driving through Taco Bell for dinner (again).

I was starved for time, low on energy and just….overwhelmed.

Well, I discovered something that quickly changed our lives— green smoothies. This blended drink of fresh fruits and dark leafy greens gave us energy, a fast healthy meal, and transformed our bodies from the inside out.

No joke. And we made this healthy habit really stick for the past 2 ½ years... and going strong. Now we have over 500,000 people from all around the world hooked on the green smoothie lifestyle too. I hope you’ll join us!

5 Green Smoothie Tips to Get You Started

Before we share our most popular green smoothie recipe, we need to welcome you into the world of green smoothies with a few important tips...
 

1. Follow the 60/40 formula.

When you’re making your first few green smoothies, don't just throw things in the blender. Chances are, it’ll taste nasty if you wing it right out of the gate. To save you a few smoothie-fails, bust out those cute lil’ measuring cups and follow this simple formula: 60% fruits to 40% leafy greens.

Go to recipe formula for a perfect green smoothie time, plus ideas for smoothie ingredients.

2. Blend in stages to avoid leafy chunks.

Chewing your green smoothie is no fun!  To get a "smooth" green smoothie experience, blend up your leafy greens and liquid-base first. Then add your remaining fruits and blend again.

3. Ditch the ice and freeze some fruits.

Want your green smoothie to be extra chilly? Freeze your favorite fruits like ripe bananas (peel first), grapes, pineapple or berries. This is also a great way to not waste ripe fruits (like those brown bananas on your counter). You can also freeze your leafy greens in a freezer-safe bag. Just make sure to add your frozen greens straight to the blender (don’t defrost these fragile lil’ guys).

4. Use raw natural sweeteners.

Add naturally sweet fruits to any smoothie that tastes bitter or a bit too “green.” By sticking with naturally sweet fruits like bananas, mango, apples, pears, or pitted dates, we avoid artificial sweeteners and processed sugars.

5. Make smoothies ahead for the perfect fast food.

We know life can get crazy busy— especially in the morning. That’s why we think green smoothies are the healthiest fast food for people who are constantly on the go.

You can blend your green smoothie the night before and store it in your fridge (up to 2 days). Use an airtight lid to limit oxidation and keep it as fresh as possible. When ready to drink, give it a good shake before you open.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups spinach
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup mango
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • 2 bananas (Use at least one frozen fruit to chill your smoothie. We often use frozen mangos and bananas our green smoothies.)

Instructions
 

  • Tightly pack 2 cups of leafy greens in a measuring cup and then toss into a blender.
  • Add water and blend together until all leafy chunks are gone.
  • Add mango, pineapple and bananas and blend again until smooth.
  • Pour into a mason jar (or cute cup of your choice).
  • Gulp or sip like a rawkstar!

Easy 3 Ingredients for a Green Smoothie

Green Smoothie Challenge on 100 Days of #RealFood

The basic smoothie recipe only has three ingredients — so easy! You just combine your favorite leafy green vegetable, fresh or frozen fruit, and a liquid (to help it blend). 

You can also include other healthy ingredients such as chia seeds, coconut oil, peanut or almond butter, hemp seeds, flax, cocoa (for a chocolate smoothie), cinnamon, acai powder, or even protein powder in your smoothie for extra benefits or flavor.

1) Leafy Greens

Almost all leafy green vegetables (that are not lettuce) are perfect smoothie ingredients. I love pulling mine from the garden or grabbing in-season vegetables at the farmer’s market. You can use a single ingredient, or combine more than one leafy green veggie; just make sure it equals two cups.

Spinach, which is what this recipe calls for, is probably the most popular leafy green for smoothies. Mainly because it’s inexpensive, freezes easily, and has a mild taste. 

Kale is also commonly found in smoothies, some might think it has a bitter taste, but it’s definitely one of the healthiest options.

Besides spinach and kale, you can also add bok choy, swiss chard, collards (also known as collard greens), and even dandelion greens! 

2) Fresh or Frozen Fruit

This is where you get the most of your sweetener and flavor, so it’s important to use fruit that you like. Just like with the greens, almost anything goes when it comes to adding fruit to your smoothie — and you can use any combination, as long as it equals 3 cups.

If you’re making the green smoothie recipe below you’ll need a cup of mango, a cup of pineapple, and two bananas. 

Tip: Use frozen fruit to make a cold smoothie. You can freeze one of the bananas, and/or use frozen mango instead of fresh. To save time and money, you can also make green smoothies with fruit that is only frozen.

For a sweeter smoothie, use ripe (or even overripe) fruit that has strong flavors such as banana, mango, berries, orange, and pineapple. If you prefer a more “green” taste, stick to milder fruit such as pear, apple, and avocado.

Of course, that all depends on your own preferences and taste; you may need to experiment with different combinations to get it just right.

3) Water or Other Liquid

Last, but definitely not least, is water. You can use plain water, or try coconut water, coconut milk, almond milk, or any other liquid base of your choice.

Like with the other green smoothie ingredients, you can also use a combination of liquids as long as it totals two cups.

This Green Smoothie Recipe with Spinach, Pineapple, Banana, and Mango Is Perfect for Beginners

Calling this a “spinach, pineapple, banana, mango green smoothie” sure is a mouthful, so I prefer to say “perfect beginner smoothie” instead. Which is exactly what I love about this recipe; it’s the ideal combination for beginners.

When we started our real food challenge, cutting out sweet treats (and training our taste buds) was one of the hardest parts. If you’re not used to eating a lot of leafy green vegetables, and tend to gravitate towards sugary drinks, you might not like the taste of green smoothies at first.

I didn't want to share some recipe that you’d have to choke down — real food should taste good! And I find that this recipe in particular, which includes mild-flavored spinach as the leafy green and deliciously sweet fruit like mango, pineapple, and ripe bananas is a delicious start to get anyone (including kids!) loving green smoothies.

Glowing Green Smoothie

The Glowing Green Smoothie was actually created by Kimberly Snyder as a healthy breakfast idea. I simplified her recipe and adjusted the measurements to (mostly) fit with our simple green smoothie ratios. 

Ingredients for a Glowing Green Smoothie:

  • 2 cups baby spinach (packed)
  • 1-2 celery stalks
  • 2 cups water
  • Whole apple, cored and halved
  • Whole pear, cored and halved
  • 1 banana
  • ¼ of a lemon, peeled

Island Green Tropical Smoothie

An Island Green Tropical Smoothie is another sweet and delicious smoothie variation. It’s identical to the basic beginner smoothie with greens that Jen shared, but with one difference: you use coconut water instead of regular water.

The coconut water adds an extra tropical flavor and sweetness; give it a try!

Monster Green Smoothie (High Protein)

This Monster Green Smoothie is really good, especially if you’re looking for an easy breakfast smoothie or healthy post-workout snack. 

Monster Green Smoothie Ingredients:

  • 2 cups spinach
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • ½ cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter
  • 1 cup chopped mango
  • 1 avocado, peeled with pit removed
  • 2 bananas

If this recipe comes out too thick add more milk to the blender until you reach your desired consistency. You can also add chia seeds for additional protein.

FAQs for a Perfect Green Smoothie

Can you make green smoothies with frozen spinach?

This is a common question because frozen spinach tends to be packed more densely than fresh spinach. The simple answer is yes, green smoothies can be made with frozen spinach and substituted at about a 1:6 ratio. So if your smoothie calls for 2 cups of fresh spinach, use about ⅓ cup frozen instead.

Don’t defrost frozen spinach that you use for smoothies; instead toss it right into the blender. You can buy frozen spinach in a bag or freeze your own in ice cube trays for ease of use.

How can I make my green smoothies sweet?

First, make sure you’re measuring your ingredients correctly. Fruit can sometimes be difficult to measure, especially if you’re working with large pieces.

Second, I suggest using fruit that’s as ripe as possible. For bananas, that usually means once they’re browning.

Third, consider using milder leafy greens. Spinach is usually on the sweeter side, but if you don’t like the taste try substituting with romaine lettuce instead.

Finally, if you still find your smoothie on the bitter side you can adjust the fruit and veggie ratios so there’s a little more fruit and fewer greens.

When is the best time to drink a green smoothie?

Anytime! Although a lot of people swear by drinking them in the morning, you’ll benefit from drinking smoothies at any time during the day. 

A lot of people like to drink green smoothies in the morning as a breakfast alternative, which is great if you’re busy and would normally turn to a less-healthy option. Green smoothies are also fantastic pre or post workout drinks!

Are green smoothies healthy? 

Like with anything, health is relative, but green smoothies can definitely be a healthy part of your day. I believe healthy foods include real food ingredients and this green smoothie recipe is made with 100% real food. 

One thing I love about green smoothies is that you can adjust the recipe for your dietary needs or to avoid allergens.

What is the difference between a green smoothie and green juice?

Green juice is made by extracting the liquid (juice) of several ingredients using a juicer — removing most of the fiber in the process — whereas green smoothies are made by combining whole ingredients, plus water, in a blender.

While they can have the same ingredients added to them, green juice and green smoothies are two different things and have different levels of nutrients.

How can I make a thick smoothie?

I usually just add additional ingredients such as a handful or two of spinach or another banana if I want to make a thicker smoothie. You can also add greek yogurt to thicken a smoothie, if you like.

If your smoothies are consistently turning out too thin, reduce the amount of liquid in your recipe.

What is the best blender for making smoothies?

Honestly, it’s all about personal preference and your budget. Blendtec and Vitamix blenders are both great options, especially if you want a multi-purpose appliance that will thoroughly blend your smoothies.

How can I make a smoothie without a blender?

It’s tough, if not impossible, to get perfect smoothies without a blender but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a smoothie when there’s no blender available. To make a smoothie without a blender: cut the recipe in half and add all ingredients, plus two ice cubes, to any cup or jar with a lid, then shake vigorously.

Blender containers made for protein powder work especially well as blender alternatives if you want smoothies on the go.

    Finally!!!!! An article that teaches people how to make a green smoothie and how to vary it to their own liking. There is nothing more frustrating then looking at a 'Top 10 Healthiest Smoothie' site which takes you through each recipe one at a time completely flooded with ads and pop-ups.

    I think I am using the wrong measuring cups to measure the kale and fruits. I used the cup for flour and not liquids. Should I have done that? My liquid to fruits and veggie was way off.

    Smoothies are a great way to start the day and quite healthier too. I have made my smoothies daily and always enjoy it. It has even replaced the regular cereal, so iam on the 100 days whole food challenge. Thanks for being the change agent.
    I experiment with all types of fruits and vegetables that I can get and it comes out delicious.

    Well, I decided to grow kale this year in the garden--because it is just so good for you. In the back of my mind I thought green smoothies--but how could I choke that down. So I hemmed and hauled and used the kale in salads & soups, but then this morning I thought enough was enough. I picked kale some kale & decided to halve your recipe in case I had to dump down the sink. 1 C kale. 1 C water & because I wanted a higher fruit ratio 1 banana & 1 pear. Done in a jiffy-no added sweetners. So excited--it is delicious. Still in disbelief. The pear gave great texture and there is an almost cinnamon taste to it. Did not use any frozen fruits--next time for sure. I have a great thermos that will keep this cold too! Best part my old hand-me-down Oster blender from the 1970's (avocado color) did a superb job so no need to buy a $500 blender. Thank You! Next stop--sign up for the challenge.

    Hi, someone told me that if I make a smoothie I should not mix more than one green (for example kale and spinach together ) because supposedly the vitamis in one will cancel out the other one. It doesn't really make sense to me because how do we make salads with a bunch of greens mixed together then? Has anyone else heard anything like that? Is there a rule or a guide which vegetables can be or shouldn't be mixed together?

    Hi I am allergic to pineapples, what would be a good substitute? I also add 2 tablespoons of peanut butter powder or peanut butter to my smoothies as well.

        This is absolute rubbish - you can add as many leafy green vegetables as you like. I fact the more variety the more vital nutrients.

      Just to let you know, if you replace the bananas with berries, the smoothie will not be as sweet. especially if you have greens in there, it may not taste great but it's completely up to you and your taste buds.

      As for how much to add, i would say a little less than a cup to each banana, however you should just add as much as you feel is right. Smoothie making isn't an exact science, jut do what you want.

    I want to add more fruits and raw veggies to my diet. Based on my research smoothies and juicing is the way to go. Your recipe sounds good and I willing to give it a try. I've seen reports of adding ground flax seeds to a smoothie is good. Do you have any recipes that include flax seeds. Or do you not recommend them.

      Hi Barbara. You can always hop over the the Simple Green Smoothies site and pose this question to the gurus. :) But, I add 1-2 T of freshly ground flax pretty much always to my smoothies (and to my oatmeal) for its high omega 3 content. It is important to buy the whole seed and grind it fresh (I use a coffee grinder) because flax quickly loses much of its nutrient value once ground. Hope that helps.

    I've just started drinking green smoothies and am already a huge fan! I use 2 cups of spinach, 1 apple(not peeled), 1 small orange, 1 banana, 5 strawberries, 1 cup of water, and a few ice cubes to thicken it up. OMG DELISH! I was wondering though if there is any way to add some protein to it without using a protein powder (I am very against those products-I try to keep it clean and real). Any suggestions?

    Thanks for the great recipes! I just wanted to share my recipe...
    2 apples, 1 cucumber and a small piece of ginger in a juicer then put into a blender with 3 cups of mixed spinach and Kale. Delicious!!

    My 4 year old was very excited about the idea of a making a "green smoothie". The resulting product did not disappoint! My 2 year old asked for seconds and my 4 year old gave it a "thumbs up" and an "Awesome!". The only addition we made was a touch of honey. I'm hoping to keep the ingredients on hand in our kitchen so we can make this often! Thank you for sharing!!

    can i just drink green smoothie to lose weight and don't eat food. can i drink it all day and just eat a bake chicken for dinner and that all. will it cut my appetite.

    I made a few substitutions to the recipe that are really great
    Add 1 cup of chopped kale
    Omit mango. Use 1 cup of peaches (sliced) usually about 8-10 slices
    Omit water. Use 2 1/2 cups of coconut water
    Use 1 cup crushed pineapple
    Follow the same directions but be sure to chill items beforehand and blend kale with spinach in the beginning

    While I'm sure these recipes taste good, they very high in sugar content due to the high fruit content. Berries would provide more nutrients, a bit less sugar and up the antioxidants. Just a suggestion for those of us who need to limit our sugar and carb intake. When people start eating more greens without the sugar boost, they acquire a taste for real green foods. The health benefits of pure green juice are unsurpassed!

    I have found that also adding a piece of fresh ginger root, a piece of fresh turmeric root, a dash of pepper, some alkaline plant-based foods (such as lemon, lime, orange), and some chilled green tea (replace same amount of other liquids) to my green smoothies adds additional health benefits.

    I notice in the recipe that you list lots of liquids, but not cow's milk. Is that a personal preference or does the consistency of cows milk just not work out as well?

    I make a smoothie every morning before work. I use my Nutribullet. It works great. A handful of fresh spinach, 2 frozen strawberries, 1/2 c. of frozen blueberries, a banana, cup of organic low fat vanilla yogurt, ground flax seeds, a teaspoon of chia seeds and add just a little milk to thin it out a little. This keeps me till lunch time.

    Love the formula you have provided and will be using this in future. I've been makeing smoothies for a while but when I have decided to experiment I have ended up with some 'interesting' results. That said, this morning my natural yoghut, frozen raspberries, ginger, ground flaxseed and kale smoothie worked a treat. Though i did add half a banana as the raspberries were a bit sharp! I am still struggling to get my kids to have smoothies with greens in so I will be trying the recipe above.

    Hi,
    I got a Ninja for Christmas so I've been experimenting with different smoothies (first timer here). I just found your site and it's the first one that gave the hint of mixing the water and the kale together first to prevent the grittiness/left over bits that I've been putting up with but not really liking. Such a simple tip, but a real help! Made a big difference in today's smoothie. Thank you! Today's was simple, but I've liked it best so far. Just kale, banana, apple, plain yogurt, water, ice. I'm going to look into your challenge. :)

    I'm not a fan of blending the smoothies the night before - they don't taste the same to me. To save time, and to keep from wasting produce I "pre-bag" my smoothie contents and throw them in the freezer. I usually make 7 at a time with one big bunch of spinach and assorted fruit. In the morning I just pull out a container, throw it in the bullet with the liquid and I'm out the door with minimal clean-up.

    Every site that has green smoothie recipes lists the number of servings, but they never tell you how many ounces make up a serving. Why can't ANY of them list the number of ounces in a serving AND why can't they list the total ounces the recipe makes?????

      Hi Jennifer. Not sure but you can divide the liquid total by the number of servings suggested. That will give you the serving size. :)

      Hi Jennifer! If you visit our site you'll see that all of our recipes make about 2 servings, which is 32 ounces (some recipes make 40 ounces). One serving size in our world is 16 ounces (2 cups), but sometimes I'll drink 32 ounces (4 cups) to stay full longer. Hope that helps!

    I found these awesome flavored coconut waters at winco the other day. They are tropical fruit flavored! As someone who has not yet gone to the full on straight coconut water way yet, that is an excellent alternative for me. I like my smoothies to be really watery, so it's nice to use coconut water as it provides a little more substance than the water. Hoping I can buy just huge coconut water jugs and not need them flavored next time. looking forward to using your formula! Thank you!

    i have always been into juices but am now just starting into green smoothies.
    was wondering what you use to do your blitzing? I have just invested in a nutribullet pro 900 but haven't received it yet so haven't have a chance to try it
    can a normal household blender make these green smoothies?

      If you're truly invested in smoothies, get a Vitamix blender. Hands down, the best blender on the market for decades. I have used mine daily for 3 years with no break downs or problems - easy to clean too. Other blenders just do not have the motor power to last. Happy blending!

      Don't get pushed into thinking you need a $200 blender because that just not true. ANY quality $30 blender will do just fine, the only thing you need to look at is the watt rating, 750 and up is more then adequate for household use.

    I've been making green smoothies most mornings for several months now and I love them. I never eat fruit normally so by drinking a green smoothie I went from 0 servings to about 1.5-2.5 servings of fruit a day! One thing I find though is sometimes if I only have a smoothie in the morning it can upset my stomach because of all the fibre (I have a very sensitive tummy) so I try and have a piece of toast with it and that helps. Also, I find that smoothies can make you have a bit of a sugar crash so I use cows milk (9 grams of protein per cup)as my liquid and add a good scoop of whey powder to add a bunch of protein which helps me not crash 2 hours later. Additionally, to save time I buy bags of frozen fruit (which are pre cut and washed) and put them in the fridge to defrost and use as needed. I don't like adding frozen fruit because then I have to add way more liquid (in my case, milk) and it makes way too much smoothie for me. Also, I personally never make smoothies ahead of time because I find they don't taste the same and they lose nutrients.

    Can you please tell how to make one serving in terms of portions if I want to use Kale Spinach Celery Lemon and Ginger? The lemon and ginger are the tricky parts because it can come out too strong.
