Where to Find Tuna Steaks

I've had a lot of luck finding mine at Fresh Market or Whole Foods. If you don't have one of those stores around you, I would look at your local farmers' market or grocery store and be sure to look for REAL seafood. I've also purchased from ButcherBox before when I couldn't find anything local.

How to Sear Tuna Tacos

It doesn't take long at all to sear the tuna, so make sure you don't overcook it. Place the tuna in a pan with oil and sear on each side for only 2 to 3 minutes. You want it to be mostly pink in the middle.

Side Dish Ideas for Tuna Tacos

It paired perfectly with the homemade slaw and some fresh mango on the side.

Ingredients

For the Tuna + Marinade

  • 1 pound fresh ahi tuna steaks
  • ⅓ cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • ½ jalapeno pepper (or serrano pepper, seeded and minced)
  • ⅓ cup raw sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Slaw

  • 3 cups green cabbage (thinly sliced)
  • 1 cup radishes (finely chopped, greens removed)
  • ½ cup fresh cilantro leaves (chopped)
  • ⅓ cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup red onion (diced)
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • pepper (to taste)

Instructions

For the Tuna + Marinade

  • Place the tuna in a shallow dish. Whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and pepper and pour over top. Add a little water if necessary to fully submerge the fish. Cover and refigerate for at least 30 minutues or up to 2 hours.
  • Pour the sesame seeds onto a plate. Remove the tuna from the marinade and roll in the seeds to coat.
  • Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat and sear the tuna to your desired doneness. We prefer 2 to 3 minutes per side so it's still mostly pink in the middle. When almost done, pour a couple spoonfuls of the marinade over top of the tuna and cook for a minute more.
  • Slice the tuna thin and serve with warm corn tortillas and the slaw (recipe below).

For the Slaw

  • In a large bowl, toss together the cabbage, radishes, cilantro, sour cream, red onion, lime juice, salt, and pepper until well combined.

Notes

  • Consuming raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, shellfish or eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness.
  • We recommend organic ingredients when feasible.
